How to Cook Rice
Measure rice in a rice cooker/pot/steamer. One cup per diner is ample. Rinse rice; pour and measure water level by placing the tip of your middle finger on top level of rice. Water should reach middle crease of finger. Add another centimeter or two for rice that was planted on dry land.
When cooking with the rice cooker, simply push the “on” button. The rice will automatically be perfectly steamed—dry, easy to separate with a fork, soft, but firm, not mushy. Another way is to boil rice in a pot on the stove on medium heat for 15-20 minutes with lid on. Simmer on low heat for 5 minutes, pot covered, to steam cook rice to perfection.
A third way is to use a new rice steamer that comes in a plastic bowl with a tight seal (available in kitchenware stores). Simply mix rice and correct amount of water, seal, and cook in a microwave for 15 minutes.
A lily type plant, pandan, placed inside a steaming pot of rice can make rice smell heavenly. Eggs can be poached when placed whole in steaming pot of rice.
